ITR is members only; however, anyone can join, and it is free. The members take their sobriety seriously and most are not court ordered or forced to be there. They are going for the spirituality that helps motivate sobriety and make it part of their purpose. The focus is to celebrate sobriety, encourage others to remain sober, talk about feelings and experiences that are related to their recovery, has both spiritual and regular applications for AA/NA in this online platform that holds daily open meetings, three or more times depending on which specialty group is scheduled which are Alanon, Agnostic for both AA and NA, women’s only, LBGT+ addiction, narcotics anonymous and spiritual recovery with AA traditions included and recently added yoga recovery which I intend to research for potentially utilizing it in my practice. At the end of the meeting, they recite the Lord’s Prayer, but it is voluntary, and those who do not want to participate are under no obligation. Many members are long-time sober and “grateful alcoholics,” a term for someone who is grateful for having gone through recovery for spiritual growth and mental health, and believes it opened their eyes to their better self. One person was struggling with her car breaking down and not having money for repairs, but she was grateful that she was able to resist the temptation of drinking to alleviate her stress and some other group members asked to talk to her in private after the meeting to see how they could help. Another member is still dealing with the loss of her mother and has been relying heavily on God and the foundation of the 12 steps, along with her sister, to see her through. I have always felt that support for addiction was important for a successful recovery. Hearing others’ stories and struggles helps others know they are not alone and the struggle is very real, but others have come out successful. It shows how deeply people believe in their resolve to continue sobriety, and it is really inspiring to see and hear from all these success stories. REFERENCES American Psychiatric Association.
