Original Question

What are the advocacy priorities for the population? Read a selection of your colleagues’ posts and respond to at least two of your colleagues on two different days by supporting or expanding on the ideas identified by your colleague or sharing additional perspectives on the population, advocacy priorities, and/or policies described by your colleague. The population of patients that I am currently familiar with includes those with mental health illnesses, who are being diagnosed with major depression, bipolar disorder, and substance use addiction; this group of patients is adults aged 21 and above These populations are low-income earners who depend on the government for their daily survival. The patient in this group uses Medicaid, which may not cover all the services needed. The needs of this population include insurance that can cover all their health needs. How are disparities reflected in policy, and policy reflected in the disparities Patients with major depression and substance use abuse disorder may not get the full treatment needed despite the PARITY Act law. U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS, September 2024, makes final rules on MHPAEA to protect plan participants and beneficiaries from facing greater restrictions on access to MH/SUD benefits as compared to medical /surgical benefits. (CMS,2024) PARITY law prohibits discrimination, but the health care practitioner finds it difficult to get reimbursed for the services provided to patients with Medicaid. Medicaid patients have greater difficulty scheduling health care appointments compared to private insurance patients (Hsiang, W, et al,2019) What is the role of nursing individuals and collectively in influencing policy decisions that adversely impact vulnerable populations? The role of nursing individuals is to work professionally, not focus on the insurance of the patient, but to deliver quality service to the patient that will produce better outcomes. Nurses should advocate by joining organizations that can champion the causes of legislation that considers patient-facing disparities and discrimination. Conclusion Advocacy for mental health patients is imperative in nursing; this will reduce disparities and inequality in patients’ treatment, and it will improve patient outcomes.
