Original Question
Shorten “Chronic pancreatitis is a process of progressive fibrotic destruction of the pancreas. Forms of the disease include chronic calcifying (most common), chronic obstructive, and steroid-responsive. Chronic alcohol abuse and smoking (nicotine induces oxidative stress in the pancreatic acinar cells) are the most common cause of chronic calcifying pancreatitis because repeated exacerbations of acute pancreatitis can lead to chronic changes. The disease is idiopathic in about 25% of cases. Obstructive pancreatitis is associated with fibrosis and stricture from trauma endoscopic procedures, abdominal blunt trauma, gallstones, or tumors. In obstructive pancreatitis only the part of the pancreas distal to the obstruction is involved. Steroid responsive disease is associated with autoimmune pancreatitis. Autoimmune chronic pancreatitis has two subtypes: type 1 (lymphoplasmacytic sclerosing pancreatitis) is a multisystem fibro inflammatory syndrome known as immunoglobulin G4- (IgG4-) related disease that affects pancreatic ducts and veins and presents with painless obstructive jaundice; type 2 (idiopathic duct centric pancreatitis) involves a neutrophilic infiltrate in the pancreatic duct epithelium with duct obliteration and is pancreas specific. Both subtypes respond immunomodulators
