Original Question
Please respond to this post written by another student. In the above referenced case study the patient is only able to access some of her tests and lab results from her electronic PHR. For the consumer, immediate access to personal health information including lab and other diagnostic studies is a huge benefit. The con in this situation is that not all of the information is available in the same manor. Thankfully, this patient realizes that she has had many more tests and labs than are available for her to see electronically, and she takes the steps to understand why. There could be some who would not realize this and then base their decisions on only limited information. The huge con here is that there is no standard software system in place. The patient has utilized many providers and it appears that she can only access results that were ordered by her PCP. However, according to our text, (Hebda, 2019) one of the goals of HER is to engage the patient in their plan of care. Although the patient realized that she could not access all of her information in the same way she was aware that she had the ability to obtain her records, some of which could be accessed using her PHR and share that information with her family so they could discuss a plan. Having the ability to maintain all or most of a patient’s medical records and history in an electronic portal or PHR allows for providers to see current medications which can reduce the risk for drug-drug interactions as well as drug allergies, this is a huge safety benefit for patients. Many older adults receive care from a PCP and specialists so having a system that can capture all of that information is a huge leap forward for continuity of care. Past labs and studies can be accessed by other providers therefore reducing the amount of tests a patient has to undergo, and providers can access and review this information prior to a patient’s appointment which leads to a more informative, comprehensive use of time for the patient and the provider. (Hebda, 2019). Nicolas, et. el. 2019 reviewed the impact of electronic patient portals and found the among diabetic patients having the ability to directly message their providers through their portal led to better glycemic control. I believe that giving patients electronic access to PHR is great. I remember as it relates to my own health care, how frustrating it used to be to get notes, test results and labs from one provider to another. It was a process that often had to be started several weeks before an appointment where that information was needed. Now patients can easily access this information and can share it with other providers who may not have access to the same EHS. Even when practicing, I have had to call medical records and request documents and then print a form, sign the form, send it back and wait which usually had to be followed up by a call and more waiting. This was a very time consuming process and often times delayed treatment or caused a physician to re-order a test that they didn’t quickly available. If a patient can provide past treatment history to a provider who can’t access it themselves it speeds up treatment which leads to better patient outcomes. It can, however, be a challenge for patients to know what information they have access to and what they don’t. As the case study showed us, if a patient sees many different providers throughout different health systems they will be lacking some information and may not realize this when communicating with other medical professionals or when using that information to make decisions.
