Original Question

I need to reply to this post below. The specialty I chose is nursing informatics because it aligns with my interest and mission. I have mentioned before that I want to continue impacting and improving patient care, and I found that nursing informatics will allow me to do just that. I have learned through personality tests that I have a “blue” personality which means that I am analytical, detail-oriented, and conceptual, so the data-driven foundation of nursing informatics is fitting. In this field, I would be able to “learn to identify gaps in patient support and patient care and use this information to make real-world improvements in those areas.” (Walden University, n.d.). I have been back and forth with identifying what advanced nursing field I want to pursue. Nursing informatics piqued my interest, but I did have some reservations because of my perception of it. I had difficulty understanding what nursing informatics is about, probably because I would encounter a lot of jargon that did not explain it well. I would see the word “data” and analysis a lot, but I could not picture how that would translate into a whole profession. I could not envision the day-to-day task of someone in the nursing informatics field. When I consulted my peers, most were not familiar with it either. I believe that one of the contributing factors to this is that it is relatively new. “The American Nurses Association (ANA) recognized nursing informatics (IN) as a nursing specialty in 1992.” (Bickford, 2009, p. 855.). Lastly, I had a fear that there might not be a lot of job opportunities available, considering that my organization’s nursing informatics department only consists of two staff members. Once I complete this degree, I wondered if I would be able to get a job in my organization? With those concerns in mind, I began my research. I referred to the American Nurses Association’s scope of practice of nursing informatics, which explained in depth what it is, what one in that field does, and its impact and importance in the nursing field. (American Nurses Association, 2015). I also looked to friends and colleagues in the area to gain some insights into how it translates in practice. I have received great feedback as they speak highly of their choice. My direct reports, familiar with my work, interests, and strengths, have reassured me that they can see I would be a good fit for this field. Lastly, I already have some exposure to this specialty in the work I do in my nursing council, and I found it meaningful and enjoyable. These factors validate my choice to pursue this specialty. I found an affiliated organization, American Nursing Informatics Association (ANIA), through the Walden University website. ANIA offers membership in different tiers: regular, associate, senior, and student. Registered nurses can obtain a regular membership by applying online and paying annual dues of $99.00. (American Nursing Informatics Association, 2021). With this membership, ANIA offers educational resources such as journals, webinars, certification preparation courses, a digital library, and networking opportunities through numerous conferences and events. (American Nursing Informatics Association, n.d.). Upon enrolling in the master’s program at Walden University, I joined ANIA in hopes that it would be a valuable resource for me throughout my study and career. Reference American Nurses Association.
