Original Question
I am looking to add to this conversation. Today I would like to go over legislation regarding nutrition labels and banning of food colorings such as red 3. Right now, I would like to specifically go over a proposed rule for front of package nutrition labels. “The FDA is proposing to require a front-of-package (FOP) nutrition label on most packaged foods to provide accessible, at-a-glance information to help consumers quickly and easily identify how foods can be part of a healthy diet” (U.S. Food and Drug Administration, 2025). This label will include saturated fats, sodium, and added sugars as well as a low, medium, and high content levels as means to better aid in overconsumption rates and to promote healthier choices. The preferred outcome of this proposition is to usher the American people into a healthier lifestyle, as it helps to highlight the most harmful problem areas found in the American diet, which leads to obesity and, in turn, health complications. I think that a common response to this will be positivity, as it aims to help better point out a healthy choice over a not-so-healthy choice. I have to agree with this legislation, as someone who grew up obese and still struggles with intake of sugars, this will be a huge change to helping towards healthier lifestyles, for myself and others who may be struggling. By adding front of package labels with these specifics, it can help me more quickly determine if the food will be good, rather than the sole focus of the front of the package being to make the food look appetizing and appealing to the consumer. This will aid in making more informed choices, over the impulsive ones we may made, as this allows for less effort of looking at the back of every package each time you want to see if a healthy choice is being made. It can also help with deceptive marketing, in which companies may use certain labels to sell more of something (think “free range” with eggs, where it sounds good and they aren’t caged, but they’re still vastly overcrowded and suffering. These labels can be just as deceiving with nutrition, where it sounds better than it actually is). Read more about this proposition here: https://www.fda.gov/food/nutrition-food-labeling-and-critical-foods/front-package-nutrition-labeling Another big change we are seeing with current legislation is the ban on petroleum-based artificial food dyes, an example being red 3’s most recent ban in the USA. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and U.S. Food and Drug Administration are looking to push for bans on other artificial dyes, such as “FD&C Green No. 3, FD&C Red No. 40, FD&C Yellow No. 5, FD&C Yellow No. 6, FD&C Blue No. 1, and FD&C Blue No. 2” (FDA, 2025). These artificial dyes are, if legislation goes as planned, to be phased out of the American diet entirely by the end of 2026. For food service, this legislation could change the way that food is presented physically, and will make companies change their recipes based on the new legislation’s allowed dyes. The anticipated outcome, as well as purpose, is to help shift Americans towards a more natural-based diet, over artificial additives and dyes. I believe some responses to this would be either those for more natural dyes, and some who may have complaints due to the inability to use ultra-red or other similar colorful dyes, which in turn may harm the presentation or color of a product (it will not look as “tasty” or pigmented, such as Takis for example). This is one thing I also agree with, as I’m all for making things more natural where we can. This can help with less chemicals or additives where we don’t need them, and may help to prevent rising issues with them in food that we may not currently be aware of. I don’t believe that foods have to be a super bright color to be appealing, and find ultra bright looking foods to be too unnatural to eat personally. I think having less colorful foods will be a great way to change not only to a more natural looking presentation, but present oppotunities to change the way we choose our food options
