Original Question

JHB Incorporated is a well-known construction company founded by Mr Jaco H. Botha, based in Johannesburg. Mr Botha established the company in 1998 and has enjoyed success (commercially, financially and in terms of health and safety performance) since then. This is in no small part due to Mr Botha and his team’s commitment to remaining one of the best product and service providerswithin the industry. JHB Incorporated is comprised of a factory which produces and supplies a number of building materials (such as wood, plaster, cement, various metals, and plastic) to make a range of items from doors to roofs and everything in between. The company is also comprised of a warehouse in which these materials and final products are stored before they are transported to or collected by clients. As a construction company, JHB Incorporated is also involved in numerous construction projects in and around Johannesburg. These construction projects range from simple home expansions and renovations, to complex construction projects like building high-rise hotels, apartment and office buildings. Due to the diverse nature of the company, and the various activities its employees are involved in, health and safety issues are a big concern for Mr Botha. With the aid of in-house health and safety advisors, Mr Botha continually aims to ensure that the work environment is as safe as is reasonably practicable, regarding the health and safety of employees and members of the public. The in-house safety advisors also ensure that Mr Botha and his organisation remain compliant with the legal requirements of the South African OHS act. In his attempt to provide a safe and healthy work environment, Mr Botha and his health and safety advisor Ms Mbali Dube (as well as other members of the company) regularly conduct both formal and informal risk assessments of the different aspects of the organisation. To ensure the risk assessments are as accurate and inclusive as they can be, Mr Botha and Ms Dube always involve the employees with knowledge of and will be most affected by any risks present in a particular area. One of the factory workers recently pointed out a number of problem areas within Section B of the factory floor, which have posed a risk to fellow factory workers as well as his own safety. Although product placement and storage areas within the factory are indicated using bright tape along the factory floor, the products and materials are not always stocked correctly. This, as well as the amount of materials and products, has proved to be a problem for factory workers as last week a worker tripped over a collection of stocked materials and fell over, cutting his arm on the sharp and jagged corner of a wooden crate. Thankfully, the employee was not severely injured. The other problem area is the over-waxed surface of the factory floor. This is of particular concern within Section B. The waxy surface of the factory floor is a risk to worker health and safety as workers often find it hard to get a firm grip on the slippery floor, when navigating through Section B. Due to there being a lot of materials, products and equipment in the factory, this slippery floor has become a risk to employees, as there is the potential for employees to slip on the floor and injure themselves on surrounding equipment and materials. Question 1 Based on the information provided in the case study, suggest two principles of hazard prevention. Explain the principles and why it can be applied in this case study. Link and explain a possible control measure for each principle.
