Original Question
Explain why their post resonated with you as nurse Describe what you learned from their post as nurse. As a professional, understanding the concept of high- and low-context cultures is essential for me because I come across patients from different cultural backgrounds daily. Individuals from these backgrounds have distinct characteristics that must be given attention in order to have effective communication with them. According to Tero Trainers (2016), people from high context culture communicate with implicit language as they tend to place more value on nonverbal communication styles. On the other hand, low context cultures communicate with explicit language, meaning they engage more often in direct communication styles and have more tendencies to discuss matters just as they are. While it is possible to generalize that individuals from certain parts of the world have tendencies to belong to either high or low context, it is necessary to exercise caution so that responses given to these individuals are not stereotyped. For example in pain management, some high context cultures are considered to be stoic with pain expression even when they are in severe pain. Because of their cultural way of expressing pain, they are often stereotyped as having high pain threshold. In a situation like this, the nurse should not go with the stereotype rather, he or she should pay close attention to the non-verbal cues of pain expression and employ relevant pain assessment tool such as the non-verbal pain scale to provide appropriate intervention. In addition, it is also important to respect patient’s wishes as regards the level of family involvement they desire in the management of their health. As described by Al-Bahri, Al-Moundhri, and Al-Azri (2017), shared treatment decision making is a form of healthcare arrangement that involves the patient, patient’s family members, and physicians in making joint decision that will drive the patient’s plan of care. This process gives emotional support to patients and gives their family a chance to advocate for them. However, the level of family interference and the specific family contacts to speak with should be based on the patient’s choice. This respects patient’s autonomy and protects their privacy. The primary nurse that will be communicating with individuals involved in this kind of arrangement must be culturally competent to avoid stereotypes and make allowances for peculiarities in each case. This will lead to improved patient outcomes.
