Original Question
Help me come up with a reply to my peer’s discussion post: The video, “Substance Abuse Counseling,” has three different session examples. For the first session, the parts that I believe were effective were discussing and understanding why he was using, finding healthy alternatives and behaviors, and what previous consequences the client had from using. He explained things well and made good eye contact. The things that I think were not effective would be that the counselor talked for a very long time without giving the client a chance to respond, and at one point, I felt like he lost the client’s attention for a minute. In session two, they discussed people as triggers and how to be able to say no to someone when they are presenting you with your drug of choice. I think that the counselor had an effective way of helping the client pinpoint these triggers. The ineffective things this counselor did were that she discussed other clients who go to the same place. Also, I felt like she was pushing him a lot during the practice to the point he was super uncomfortable. In the third session, the effective things used were discussing triggers and how to work through them, and she also gave a lot of affirmations on the client’s work skills, giving her confidence in looking for work. The ineffective things the counselor did were not addressing the fact that this client might have depression, hence her always wanting to be in bed sleeping. I think that she is missing some possible co-occurring disorders. I also think that the counselor kept repeating the same things over and over again, never really moving on to anything new. Watching these videos and reflecting on change and how, when you’re in recovery, you have to change a lot of things from behaviors to people, places, and things. It reminded me of something I had learned on my journey and thought I’d share it with you guys. The brain rewiring process can take several months to years, depending on individual factors such as the type of substance and the severity of addiction. Generally, individuals need to abstain from substances for at least 90 days to start seeing improvements in brain function. This timeframe is essential for the brain to begin the complex task of forming new neural connections and restoring natural brain chemistry. (Cohen, M.G. 2024) I think this is a great reminder that healing isn’t going to be overnight but there is hope that the brain can heal, and healthy changes can be made. In the second video, Healthcare’s Compassion Crisis, I agree there is a lack of compassion in the healthcare field and in the world in general. I agreed that having compassion for others is healthier for everyone; the person giving the compassion and the one receiving the compassion both benefit in great ways. Having compassion for others can decrease burnout. After watching this video, I agree we need to show more compassion to one another, and it doesn’t have to be long or take a lot of time. As he said in the video, it only takes 40 seconds to show compassion.
