I did my case study on this incident a few weeks ago and there were so many people living near the love canal that faced various health issues such as developmental issues and reproductive issues. The government in this case should definitely be responsible for cleaning up the waste in this instance as they allowed for World War II waste to be left there and stored improperly putting the people in the surrounding areas at risk of exposure. I believe that the government should be in charge of overseeing the clean up process of hazardous waste to ensure that it is properly taken care of but the company that released the waste should pay a settlement that covers the cost of the cleanup. In this case the state of New York had to pay a settlement as they allowed for waste to be dumped into the love canal for years accumulating the waste. Hooker is also at fault and deserved to pay a settlement as they sold the land above the love canal to a school board while being aware of the nuclear waste being stored below.
