Original Question
Give an overview of a policy or potential policy. Include how it could impact your community or those you care for positively negatively. Affordable Care Act is a comprehensive health care reform law. It has 3 goals which include making affordable health insurance available to more people, expand the Medicaid program to cover all adults with low income, and to support innovative medical care delivery methods to lower the cost of health care. Generally this policy benefit more people in the long run. This policy allows people to have health insurance and making more affordable for the many. Insurance companies must spend at least 80% of insurance premiums on medical care and improvements. Some of the positive impacts of this policy is that people with preexisting health conditions can no longer be denied of coverage; there is no time limit on care; more screenings are covered; and prescription drugs cost less. On the other hand it also has its setbacks. For instance, people have to pay higher premiums. Since insurance companies now offer a wider range of benefits they also need to raise their premiums. Increase of taxes are results of having Affordable Care Act. This is to help pay for ACA. Taxes were also increased for people with high incomes. Another con of this policy is that business are cutting employee hours to avoid covering for them. Since we know that business with more full-time employees need to offer insurance or make payments to cover healthcare expenses for employees. Next, discuss the importance that interdisciplinary collaboration would have related to the policy. Medical relationships in this era of health care are likely to include partnerships between various types of clinicians and the communities in which patients reside, as well as a host of new actors, from social workers and navigators to scribes and community health worker. These community-based partnerships are critical to providing health care that is both relevant and appropriate for addressing problems, and sustainable. New team members, such as navigators, are in fact necessary precisely because the ACA establishes new relationships between insurance providers and patients, many of whom are unfamiliar with basic concepts such as deductibles, premiums, open enrollment periods, and other technical insurance terms. At the same time, especially in the area of the expanded Medicaid population, the ability of existing medical relationships and systems to meet the needs of these new patients is, in many ways, a test of the ACA’s promise to transform medicine, not only through increased access, but in quality and cost as well. Then, identify any ethical concerns it raises for you and why. We know that Market-based reforms promotes justice, and beneficence by allocation health care resources fairly and granting services to the most vulnerable members, respectively but the ethical concern that this policy raises is the expanding of coverage through the private market. Most notable is that gains in coverage will not be distributed equitably. Of the millions of people who will remain uninsured under the ACA, some will lack coverage by choice, but many will lack it due to financial hardship. Compose a 280-character or fewer Tweet that describes what you have shared with the class. Remember Twitter only allows 280 characters (this include spaces, etc.) so you will need to be concise. It should include a hashtag. Include a reference URL if applicable. Share this Tweet in the discussion. (Note: A Twitter account is not required). ACA will help us live the inherent right we have to have a good and quality health care. #HealthIsForAll #MakeHealthCareAccessible References: https://www.healthcare.gov/glossary/affordable-care-act/ https://www.healthline.com/health/consumer-healthcare-guide/pros-and-cons-obamacare#cons https://journalofethics.ama-assn.org/article/ethics-expanding-health-coverage-through-private-market/2015-07
