Original Question

Walking through the entire project and having an understanding of all affected tangential processes is the best way I have been able to determine scope for my project. For example, in my project (converting reporting platforms to Power BI) we are focused on the reports themselves. So anything that involves reporting is in-scope. End-user training, building out the platform infrastructure and architecture, and converting reports all fall in-scope. However, the core data doesn’t change. None of the databases or servers are being altered, the data goes through multiple integrity checks before it even gets loaded, and, ultimately, the data itself isn’t changing. Even reports that are transitioned to Power BI will still use the same data sources. So the base data is out-of-scope, as it’s not being affected or altered – not by this project specifically anyway. Even accidentally including out-of-scope aspects can eat up labor hours and budgets, so developing an understanding of everything that is being affected and focusing efforts on those in-scope pieces are key.
