Though leadership and management have distinct roles, they must both be applied collaboratively to be effective. Managers must possess leadership skills and leaders must be able to manage people and resources. Over the years, several theories have been put forward to demonstrate the qualities that make a good leader. The following is a comparison of two theories. Great Man Theory – This theory posits that great leaders were born with the necessary traits to lead, charisma, confidence, intelligence, and social skills. These traits are inherent and in the question of nature vs. nurture, the theory contends that nature is responsible for leadership traits. Such people will naturally find themselves in leadership roles even without trying and others will find themselves following them (Hunt & Fedynich, 2019). The major strength of the theory is its ability to identify the core leadership values and traits. Once these traits have been identified, a match can be made in the selection of a leader. In nursing, we may be able to select leaders born with the necessary qualities to become a leader. The major weakness is that the theory does not consider a person’s experiences, which play a huge role in molding a leader. Leadership can be a product of cultivation, challenging work, and self-discipline. Nursing leadership is cultivated over long and arduous years, and that proves to be more valuable than inherent qualities. Contingency Theory – The contingency theory is situational, in that the current situation will determine the leadership style. It contends that no style of leadership is applicable to all situations, and that the situation will always determine the necessary leadership style. The theory is a product of numerous variables and good leaders must be able to assess followers’ needs and the situation at hand and act (or react) accordingly (Heller, 2019).
