My father was diagnosed with RA a few years ago and I have noticed that he is not as active and not able to do some of the physical things like yardwork that he used to be able to do. He told me it also affects him mentally because it reminds him that he is not as young as he once was and that he needs to ask for help even though he has always been a do-it-yourself kind of guy. His doctor put him on Methotrexate which is typically first line therapy for RA. Methotrexate is a disease modifying anti-rheumatic drug or DMARD which works by blocking the effects of the chemicals released when your immune system attacks your joints, which could otherwise cause further damage to nearby bones, tendons, ligaments and cartilage (National Health Service, 2023). Other common DMARDs used for RA include leflunomide, hydroxychloroquine, and sulfasalazine (National Health Service, 2023). NSAIDS, steroids and biological treatments such as adalimumab, etanercept and infliximab are also used to treat RA, usually in combination (National Health Service, 2023). Other treatments include physiotherapy, TENS unit, and occupational therapy, however, if joints become severely damaged, surgery may be considered such as carpal tunnel and tendon release, arthroscopy, and even joint replacement (National Health Service, 2023).
