Original Question

respond to post The nursing theory that I have chosen is Nightingale’s Environment Theory. This theory, according to Alice Petiprin,(2023), Florence Nightingale believed that environment plays a crucial role on patient’s healthcare outcomes. The patient’s environment should consist of the best bed, linens, light, food, and cleanliness to name a few. These factors play a role in healing. The nurse should adjust these accordingly. For example, a patient whom has many wounds should have a sand bed, multiple linen changes, bed baths, and food that promotes wound healing. An elderly patient with dementia ,on the other hand, needs plenty of light to assist with orientation. This patient also needs their room to stay about the same to encourage independence so that they can establish a routine. The article I chose for discussion is about an experiment where individuals attempted the life of an inmate to understand the conditions of those imprisoned and its effect on the psychological aspect of individuals. The study was of 24 college students with no mental, drug, or criminal history and place them in a simulated prison. I believe one of the unethical aspects was there was no way to tell the time, being there were no clocks and no windows either. This created disorientation. In addition, the conditions became unsanitary with the right to use the restroom in a appropriate toilet was taken away. This can lead to illness or the opposite of Nonmaleficence. The prisoners were also forced to strip naked often. This ethical principle ultimately violated is Autonomy which gives patients the right to make decisions about their bodies. Nurses should respect this right.
