Original Question

Respond to the following discussion post and include in-text citations and references. During my clinical practice, I encountered a 5-year-old child diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). The child’s parents were hesitant about starting medication therapy (methylphenidate) due to concerns about side effects, particularly appetite suppression and sleep disturbances. However, the healthcare provider recommended immediate pharmacological intervention without fully considering the parents’ concerns or exploring alternative options such as behavioral therapy. The family, facing economic instability and limited healthcare access, struggled to attend regular follow-ups and therapy sessions, leading to delayed intervention and worsening behavioral symptoms at school and home. Suppose social determinants of health (SDOH) have been adequately addressed, such as financial barriers, parental education, and healthcare access. In that case, the provider might have collaborated with the family to develop a tailored treatment plan, integrating non-pharmacological interventions and connecting them to community resources. Studies show that shared decision-making (SDM) in pediatric care improves parental confidence and adherence to treatment plans. To facilitate this process, I explored the Ottawa Hospital Research Institute’s Decision Aids Inventory. I identified a decision aid for ADHD treatment options, which provides parents with comparative insights into medication, behavioral therapy, and lifestyle modifications. Using decision aids in pediatric practice can empower parents, enhance communication with healthcare providers, and improve adherence to treatment recommendations. As a future family nurse practitioner (FNP), I plan to integrate these tools to ensure that SDOH factors and parental preferences are considered, fostering more patient-centered and effective care plans. By involving families in treatment decisions, healthcare providers can increase trust, reduce decisional conflict, and improve long-term outcomes for pediatric patients.
