RESPOND BACK TO POST WITH A OPEN END QESTION Hi everyone. I hope that each and everyone had a spectacular holiday. Reading this chapter really enlightened me about a lot of things. In my reading I found that the reason the aging population is growing is because they are the “baby boomer” generation, the children born right after world war II. Another reason the aging population is becoming larger is because people are living longer. Robert Butler(1989) he believes ageism is as racism and sexism. Our aging population deserves our respect not just because it’s the right way to be. Unfortunately, they are enduring discrimination because of being stereotyped and the abusers have a a belief system about them that simply isn’t true. It is my greatest hope that ageism becomes a thing of the past sooner rather than later. To eliminate discrimination I believe education would be the answer as well as volunteer work. The stereotype about our aging population isn’t at all true but our aging population has the story to tell and I can imagine it’s interesting and true. Part of the hospice philosophy is the patient and family centered approach is in play to allow patients to die with dignity with the least amount of pain possible. For many years when a patient turned to hospice, it has been viewed as defeat. Human service workers can play a huge part in changing the view of hospice with the patient and the patient’s family. To begin educating that dying is a important part of the cycle of life and a meaningful part of life.
