Osteoporosis is a condition in which the bones decrease in density which can increase the risk of fractures if the patient were to fall or become injured somehow. The human body has a system of breaking down just enough of our bones’ density to then be able to rebuild it back to its baseline, and this is an equal give and take process from the ages of 25 to 50 for both genders (Johns Hopkins Medicine, 2023). So age is a nonmodifiable risk factor for osteoporosis. However, women are significantly more at risk of developing osteoporosis with aging due to the process of going through menopause where the body is no longer able to produce as much estrogen as it used to. This is because the presence of estrogen can decrease the action of osteoclasts (the cells that break down the bone), but when there is not enough estrogen in the body, osteoclasts take over while osteoblasts (the cells that rebuild the bone) are significantly less active (Cheng et al., 2022). Being born a female is also a nonmodifiable risk factor. It has been found that weight-bearing exercises that put stress on the bones encourage the bones to remain dense as we age, and it is recommended for older adults to take calcium and vitamin D supplements to increase bone health (Bae et al., 2023). So a woman who is over the age of 65 that doesn’t take any supplements and leads a sedentary lifestyle is able to modify her exercise habits and diet/supplementation in order to prevent the development of osteoporosis, but not her age or gender. As a nurse, we can explain the benefits versus consequences of participating in an annual bone density, or “DXA,” of the hips and spine to monitor the bones at highest risk of deterioration as well as explain the physiologic benefits of supplementing with calcium and vitamin D to adults over the age of 50.
