Reply to discussion post Learning Activity Case 2 Consider the following case: A 30-year-old woman arrives in the emergency department. She is diagnosed with a drug overdose. Assessment data reveal the following information: She has three children (18 months, 4 years old, and 14 years old); she is in the process of her second divorce; she took 25 diazepam (Valium) tablets (2 mg/tablet), which her doctor had given her for stress; she is unemployed; and she did not graduate from high school. Which theory (or theories) should be used to direct her care? What concepts from other theories could be used to enhance her care? First and foremost, Lazarus’ stress, coping, and adaptation theory, should be used because this patient has so much going on in her life right now and such things cause stress. Lazarus’ theory is all about how people cope with stress and focuses on their psychological responses (McEwen and Wills, 2019, p. 316). Without successfully coping with a situation, adaptation cannot occur (McEwen and Wills, 2019, p. 317). Adaptation is important in surviving and flourishing in life (McEwen and Wills, 2019, p. 317). I also think that Maslow’s human needs theory fits because this patient has three children whose needs must be met. This patient must meet her needs first in order to meet the children’s needs. Maslow’s theory breaks down needs into basic needs for survival and higher-level needs that “include self-esteem and self-actualization” (McEwen and Wills, 2019, p. 312). “Until basic deficiency needs are met, the individual does not pursue personal growth needs to develop his or her fullest potential as a human being” (McEwen and Wills, 2019, p. 312). I think that parts of the theory of planned behavior could also help in her care. This theory is driven by the persons intentions and behaviors (McEwen and Wills, 2019, p. 320). This patient must take responsibility for her actions and realize this life would not be good for her children. Helping the patient build a good attitude and good intentions will hopefully point her in the right direction and not overdose again. The transtheoretical model and stages of change will also help the patient through the stages and maintain the changes. There are six stages within this model beginning with unawareness for need to change and ending with the maintenance of changed behaviors and unwillingness to go back (McEwen and Wills, 2019, p. 323). All this information will help us better understand what the patient is going through and help her through stages of change in order to be healthy and aware of her surroundings for her children.
