Servant leadership is all about focusing on the growth and well-being of others before yourself. It involves listening, guiding, and empowering team members while creating a space where everyone can thrive (Winston & Fields, 2015). In my own experience, my mentor, who has over 25 years of leadership experience, models servant leadership by supporting our individual goals and encouraging collaboration. His approach motivates us to strive for excellence while still feeling supported and valued. One way I plan to apply servant leadership is by mentoring newer employees in public health onboarding projects. Instead of just assigning tasks, I would first learn their strengths and career goals. Then I could guide them in a way that helps them feel both productive and personally fulfilled. This aligns with what the Community Tool Box recommends, training mentors not just in skills, but in how to listen, resolve conflict, and encourage growth (Community Tool Box, 2025a). By creating a safe space for others to learn and share ideas, I can help them build confidence and motivation, which strengthens the whole team. Motivating others to grow and feel fulfilled creates a ripple effect of power, where success is shared, not hoarded. When people feel supported and seen, they perform better, engage more deeply, and often pass that support on to others (Community Tool Box, 2025b). This kind of leadership helps build stronger public health teams that are better equipped to serve communities. Servant leadership doesn’t just empower individuals—it multiplies impact across the whole system. References: Community Tool Box. (2025a). Section 3. Training Adult Mentors.
