In learning about different research methodologies, we have learned that quantitative research is focused on traditional scientific design that focuses on numbers and statistical data to help determine things like infection rates through factual data (Green & Johnson, 2022). Qualitative research on the other hand focuses more on the perceptions of individuals on their lived experiences, such as the experiences of fatigue among nurses not provided with dedicated rest breaks during their shift. Advantages to using both quantitative and qualitative methods, or a mixed methods approach could be numerous. Irvine, et al. (2020) points out that a mixed method approach combines the strengths of qualitative and quantitative research and compensates for any limitations that utilizing just one of the methods may present. By utilizing a mixed methods approach, the researcher is able to address a complex issue and present a more balanced observation of findings of the result of the research process. This balanced observation may offer a stronger, more comprehensive argument. According to Irvine, et al. (2020) a potential disadvantage to the mixed methods approach is that some researchers are unable to adequately demonstrate how the 2 methods work together in the findings. The inability to properly discuss how the methods are used together can make the study difficult to replicate, which is something that the research community looks to achieve with the scientific research process. An example of a nursing practice problem that could be studied by a mixed methods approach was presented by Doorenbos (2014) examining barriers to chronic pain management among American Indians. The mixed methods approach would allow researchers to examine the quantitative data of the care received by American Indians across the United States and the qualitative data obtained through focus groups and interviews that will capture perceptions of care received and recommended. This mixed methods approached could provide insightful information covering a comprehensive range of data into this issue in nursing. References Doorenbos A. Z. (2014).
