Original Question

In a paragraph respond to Alexis post This incident happened between me and one of my good friends a few years ago, we were discussing what we wanted to study once we entered college and this friend (I will call her B), said she wanted to become a nurse. I remember during that time B worked as a CNA so she had experience with people but I also remember she used to complain a lot about them and how the pay wasn’t that good at her job. I asked her if she ever thought of a different career choice and she asked me why, and I told her “I thought you didn’t like to take care of people, so why would you want to be a nurse.” B got super defensive and asked me “So you think I would make a bad nurse?” and I tried to tell her that isn’t what I mean but she didn’t bother to listen to whatever I had to say after that argument. I know now there was probably another way to say it without it coming off as passive aggressive but I just didn’t think about how to properly say something like that to her. I meant to ask her, why she wants to work with people as a career if she didn’t seem to enjoy taking care of the people she has to already at her job, and even now explaining it, I guess there is not a perfect way to say it without it coming off a little mean. Personally I didn’t mean for the misunderstanding to happen and I understand why she got defensive and was mad at me for a bit because of that whole conversation. The biggest consequence that came out of it was how we didn’t talk for a few weeks because of that conversation but we resolved it eventually. I think If I just stayed quiet and agreed with her instead of engaging in that kind of conversation, I would have avoided all that and she wouldn’t have ever been frustrated with me. For sure I will continue to listen more to what others say to me and even if I think I should say something, I am learning to keep it to myself because not everything needs to be said.
