Original Question

I need help responding to this post, please. Thank you. “The nursing shortage continues to be one of the significant issues that healthcare is facing in the United States. Due to the increasing demand for nursing, floating a nurse from one unit to another has been implemented in many hospitals and clinical settings to help with the nursing shortage and is cost- effective. For example, during the beginning of COVID-19, I floated from labor and delivery to the intensive care unit and pediatric intensive care unit. During this time, I was not assigned to the patient. My duty was to perform vital signs, intake and output, pass medications (by mouth), and run the COVID test to the lab. My preceptor and resources were the primary nurses in charge and conducting what needed to be done to those patients. Orienting the novice nurse to the new unit at the beginning of the shift will be appropriate without intimidating. If I were a preceptor, I would encourage a novice nurse to ask as many questions as possible and not be afraid to say “I don’t know” instead of playing the guessing game. For example, gathering supplies can be time-consuming and take time away from the patient. Nurse preceptors are vital to serving as role models and resource persons to novice nurses. They act as coaches and mentors to help these novices become strong practicing professionals. An ideal preceptor includes socializing, educating, and evaluating novis RNs transitioning to the critical care nursing environment. For example, enthusiasm, knowledge, good communication skills, emotional support, openness to self-improvement to their professional development, being resourceful, organized in the patient, and most importantly, being interested in teaching and sharing their expertise (Benner & Chesla, 2009. p. 52, 55-56).
