Masculinity , Domestic Violence, and Health in the COVID-19 Pandemic With the advent of COVID-19, the employment status of Matthew, a 40-year-old man has undergone dramatic changes. He used to be gainfully employed as a technician in a relatively small enterprise which has since ceased to operate. Matthew is no longer able to hang out with the men in the village, drinking at the rum shop since according to COVID-19 protocols, sit-down gatherings at rum shops are prohibited. Instead, he is confined to his home with his wife and three children. He had intended to undertake renovations to the small house which they own by mid-2020 but that was no longer possible. His interactions with his wife and children have changed, resulting in increased tension in the family. He has become physically and verbally abusive to his wife and to a lesser extent, his children. Meanwhile the wife has hand-sewn masks for him, her son and herself, knowing that the wearing of masks is protective and compulsory. Matthew, however, wears his mask on his chin, commenting that only bandits wear masks, and he is not one of them. He has also expressed his male friends’ dislike for seeing ‘big men’ wearing masks. 1. a) Drawing on your knowledge of masculinity and that of domestic violence, discuss what you think may have contributed to Matthew’s abusive behavior towards his wife and children (5 marks). b) More men than women have become casualties of the COVID-19 pandemic.
