It does appear that Nurse Practitioners have made better progress towards achieving full prescriptive authority than other APRN’s. During this course, we have discussed many times about the impact that nurse practitioners will and have played in the shortage of primary care physicians. To continue to provide for patients, nurse practitioners operate under the Full Practice Authority Act. Full Practice Authority gives nurse practitioners the authority to assess, diagnose, and treat patients, including the use of prescriptive medications, if they have licensure authority with the state board of nursing. Not all states operate under Full Practice Authority, meaning that not all states allow nurse practitioners to prescribe medications. However, most states do give nurse practitioners prescriptive authority. Research shows that the states that operate under Full Practice Authority and give nurse practitioners prescriptive authority improves patients access to healthcare, allows for more efficient delivery of care, decreases healthcare costs, and allows patients to see the healthcare provider of their choice. Some states that operate under Full Practice Authority include Alaska, Arizona, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Utah, etc.
