Create response to discussion board posting below. Provide feedback on whether adequate justification for the criticisms is described. Do the areas of concern need to be addressed? Why or why not? Are there signs of progress in addressing some concerns surrounding practice in applied behavior analysis? Three concerns / criticisms surrounding ABA mentioned in this week’s readings are 1.) Many individuals who would benefit from ABA services are not receiving it. This can be due to several reasons, such as healthcare, cost, insurance, transportation, generational stigmas, etc. 2.) the safety and well-being of clients or individuals receiving ABA services. In its earlier use, the limitations on what was acceptable for treatment of behavior vastly differ from what is accepted today. ABA today and ABA in the earliest days of development are two entirely different creatures. This has caused many unwanted effects. Such as the use of punishments in early ABA (Garey, 2016). Early ABA punishments could include physical reprimands, electric shock, or extended time outs. These are no longer used in today’s ABA services. The knowledge of this history has caused a stigma surrounding ABA, many parents are hesitant to allow their children to receive ABA services because of this. 3.) The intensity of services is another cause of the negative stigma surrounding ABA. There is the belief that in the early days of ABA children would receive upwards of 40 hours of intervention a week. There is no published literature to support that this was the case. This belief seems to have stemmed from Ivar Lovaas’ trial with children with Autism at UCLA (Leaf et al., 2021). Even though this claim is unsubstantiated, it is widely used in movements of anti-ABA. Based on the readings completed in this unit, I believe several steps can be taken to alleviate some of the previously mentioned concerns. The first is making resources known and available. Cities and school districts have personnel dedicated to provided families with resources they may need. The next concern is easily addressed with the code of ethics now used in ABA. As mentioned previously, many of the methods used in the early days of ABA are no longer allowed. This is because safer and more humane treatment options are now available. The intensity of services is a widely unsubstantiated concern and is easily addressed in the field of ABA. There are limitations on the number of hours children and adults are able to receive per day and per week. Within these limits, the number of hours may vary depending on the severity of the client’s needs. Looking at the current state of multiculturalism and diversity in the field of ABA, one can easily see that improvements are needed. The most important being the elimination of the barriers of culture and language differences. This does not mean to become a savant of languages and cultures, it is to seek an understanding of an unfamiliar language or culture. A key piece to eliminating this barrier and growing in this area is research. To achieve growth in this area, we must ensure all ABA professionals are honoring the extensive ways in which people differ and actively work towards equity and equality for all clients and staff (Hernandez et al., 2023).
