An issue that is unique to healthcare in the United States is the prevalence of direct-to-consumer pharmaceutical ads; in fact, such ads are banned in almost every country of the world except for the United States (Santoro, 2025). The article assigned this week states that the typical patient-doctor office visit encounter is limited to 17 minutes (Zeckhauser & Sommers, 2013). Meanwhile, the average television watcher in the US encounters 9 pharmaceutical ads per day, adding up to 16 hours per year (Parekh & Shrank, 2018). Patients are spending much more time receiving the one-sided information from the advertisements than they are with their providers. These advertisements can lead to patients self-diagnosing with conditions described in the advertisements or presenting to their prescriber the product they think is best for them based on the advertisements.
