Original Question

he first thing to come to mind when thinking of rhetoric I’ve noticed lately is an ad for a GLP1 medication. RO.co, Hers, Noom, Eden, Willow, Weight Watchers, and K Health just to name a few of these advertising brands. One ad in particular that I’ve seen pushed into so many platforms has a middle aged woman using the tagline “I’m just more me” implying that this drug also magically helped her become herself without any negative side effects. The brand “Willow” even has an ad that says “Cancel your gym membership. GLP-1s make weightless simpler-not sweatier.” These medications are targeted primarily towards women for rapid weight loss, less inflammation, fast results and no behavioral changes necessary. What they hide in this glamorous package of convincing words is the long list of side effects including hair and muscle loss, fatigue, constipation, dizziness, intestinal paralysis, the list goes on. It really frustrates me that these advertisements are geared towards insecure people as some kind of glamorized cure-all and I’m anxious to see where the conversation around this lies in the next few years.
