Original Question

Effects of kangaroo care on preterm/ low birth weight infant PICOT question: In low birth weight neonates, is kangaroo care more successful than conventional care in reducing neonatal mortality? Background: What is kangaroo care? Kangaroo care is a method of caring for a baby. Newborns are placed skin to skin with their mothers immediately after birth, with no bedding or clothing between them, allowing enough uninterrupted time ,at least 1 hour, for mother and baby to start breastfeeding. ? Issue/population affected: The neonatal era still accounts for the majority of baby mortality. In 2020, it was estimated that 2.4 million people died in their first 28 days of life ( ). LBW newborns made up about 80% of the total, while preterm infants made up the other two-thirds ( ). Every Newborn Action Plan, developed by the United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF), aims to reduce newborn mortality rate to 12 or fewer deaths per 1,000 live births ( ). P: Low birth weight/ preterm neonates I: skin to skin contact carried by mother immediately after birth C:conventional care O: reducing neonatal mortality T: during hospital stay Current standard of care:? • The current standard of care for preterm/LBW infants is conventional care, which typically involves incubators and separation from the parent.( ). Incubator care is beneficial in the isolation of a fragile infant in acute or unstable condition However, this type of care has been found to be associated with increased stress levels and decreased bonding in both the infant and the parent( ). Results:? Kangaroo care was effective in reducing neonatal mortality than conventional care Conclusions: ? Low birth weight and preterm newborns, immediate kangaroo care resulted in a significant reduction in neonatal mortality KC is safe and low-cost intervention that has been shown to be effective in reducing the length of hospital stay of preterm and/ or low birth weight infants nursing implications Nurses should: educate parents on the benefits of KC and provide support during the KC experience.() Involve partners in KC education and care… advocate..?
