Original Question
DISCUSSION RESPONSE WITH REFERENCE: Bipolar disorder affects 1-4% of the world’s population (bipolar disorder, 2006). Bipolar disorder is a set of highs and lows called mania and depressive symptoms. A patient with bipolar disorder has a genetic predetermination to get the disease. Factors for this genetic predisposition are up to 70-80% (Perrottelli et al., 2024). This disease affects men as much as women. However, women tend to cycle through manic and depressive faster than men. The neurotransmitters in bipolar illness include norepinephrine, dopamine, serotonin, glutamate, GABA, and acetylcholine (Watson & Pruszynski, 2023). The brain decreases in size in the amygdala, hippocampus, and prefrontal cortex (bipolar disorder, 2006). As we learned above, several regions of the brain are smaller. When we can visualize this on an MRI, we can see that this is a typical brain of a patient with bipolar. We can help the patient adapt to medications and behavioral treatments such as talk therapy to help them overcome such problems as the manic and depressive symptoms that may be coming on and how to prevent them or possible medication changes to help them maintain the range they would like their highs and lows to be.
