In 2015, the optimal time of five to sixty seconds was recommended (Moureau & Flynn, 2015). Nursing students must know more specific parameters and held accountable for following them to ensure competency in the clinical setting. Since then, multiple sources, including The Joint Commission, stated that best practices include rubbing 15 seconds with alcohol and drying for 15 seconds, which is much easier for students to remember (Sweet et al., 2012). Since nursing students have learned to rely on research within the last five years, research by Zhu and colleagues found that nursing adherence rates to the Joint Commission standard were less than 30% (Gilmore et al., 2023). With this information, my future advanced nursing educator will incorporate the best practices into student’s clinical learning practice. The second EBP that my future advanced practice educator will use is Tanner’s Clinical Judgement Model (TCJM)as a core learning component. Tanner’s model breaks down four components using words students understand – noticing, interpreting, responding, and reflecting. The National Council for State Boards of Nursing and the American Association of Colleges of Nursing both recognize this process of decision-making based on nursing knowledge as best practice directly related to care outcomes (American Association of Colleges of Nursing, 2024; NCLEX, 2024). As with the required best practice changes related to aseptic technique, nursing decision-making requires a best practice efficiently utilized in the clinical setting.
