Description Miss Evers’ Boys is based on a true story about Tuskegee experiment(syphilis). From 1932 to 1972, the US government conducted on 400 poor and mostly illiterate African-American peasants living around Tuskegee, Alabama. It was the natural progression of syphilis and clinical studies of its treatment. The film begins with Miss Evans testifying in the Senate, who has watched all this process. This study was conducted without proper treatment procedures for subjects. Individuals subjected to the Tuskegee syphilis study did not give patient consent or told the diagnosis of their disease. Instead, they participated in the experiment, thinking that they have “bad blood” and that they can receive treatment for free. Crucially, penicillin became the standard treatment for syphilis in 1947. Prior to these findings, syphilis often developed into chronic, painful, and fatal diseases. Rather than treating all syphilis patients with penicillin and ending their studies, Tuskegee scientists did not provide them with information on the use of penicillin and used it to continue research on how the disease spreads and kills people. Feelings Miss Evers was pleased to participate as a member of the study which began with a good purpose to find out the cure for syphilis. However, as funding for the study later dried up, Miss Evers felt a lot of guilt when the reversal of the human experiment was done to find out what reactions the study would cause if it were not treated. The men who thought they were being treated properly ended up dying without knowing what was really going on, and the experiment showed that humans can be selfish and cruel in order to achieve their own goals. I am disturbed by the fact that they thought they were being treated but in fact, they were only part of human experiments who were not treated as human beings and just had to die. It’s terrible and scary to watch. Miss Evers was moved and saddened by the guilt that she was part of the experiment and she just had to watch the whole process and ignore it. She could have left to find her happiness with the man she loved, but she gave it up and devoted her entire life to the treatment and care of syphilis patients. Her devotion to the patients is what touched my heart. She was a very loyal and dedicated employee. Evaluation and Analysis Even if we make more and more advancement in medicine, we could never understand the deterioration and death of patients who were victims of the Tuskegee study. The study was ethically not right and not justified, even though it started out with good intentions and they found treatment for syphilis. Because, the researchers intentionally made patients’ illness worse and eventually let them die which is ethically a violation of human dignity. Watching how they responded to experiments like lab rats is meaning that they don’t respect or treat them as human. They didn’t consider black men as human beings and this is an act that ignores respect of persons in Belmont’s three principles. Conclusion In conclusion, the experiments for medical development should be conducted for the purpose of improving human health and well-being. The people who participate in the experiment should be able to understand the purpose and process of the experiment accurately and obtain consent. If there’s anything that threatens their lives or worsens their illness in the process, the experiment should be ended. All human life is precious and equal. There should be no discrimination due to poverty, ignorance, or race. Action plan After watching this movie, I had a lot of mixed feelings. We can judge within the system of law but in our lives, there are situations in which we have to do something we know is ethically unacceptable. If I apply this when I become a nurse in the future, I think that no matter what kind of patient I meet, I should treat and care for them with the same mind and heart and make sure they understand all their medical situations and that we need to get informed consent.
