By utilizing an AAC device, this client will be able to have a stronger ability to communicate with others, and it’ll help this client with developing more language skills. As discussed in the chapter, its important to create a measurable goal (Bruinsma 2020). Therefore, the goal i would write would be, “Client will utilize AAC device to independently answer ‘Wh and Yes/No’ questions from individuals in clients community for 50% of trials.” This goal will help my client to develop those language skills that they are lacking. To collect the data, I would use a data collection program such as catalyst and track the frequency of times the client uses the AAC device to answer questions. To start, I would not track whether or not the answer was correct, only if they answer it independently first. Yes, we want the answer to be correct but will use prompting to help get correct answer. However, for the data to start, as long as an answer is independent it will be marked correct. A social goal i would like to implement with this client is initiating peer interactions. “Client will independently greet peers for 5 trials a day.” This goal will help the client to work on speaking with other individuals and generalize the skills we are starting to work on. This may also help the client to use the AAC device to greet peers. For data collection, I will again be tracking using frequency. By tracking with the frequency of the greetings occurring independently, we are able to see where we need to implement more goals for success. I will also be using direct observation and a social interaction checklist. This will give us the opportunity to track the frequency of instances in which the client independently initiates peer interactions. Using a direct observation with a social interaction checklist is useful in that it provides me with both quantitative and qualitative data on the interactions.
