Contingent theory believes that the individual possesses the correct traits and capability to evaluate the needs of their teams and that no one way or style of leadership may be applicable to all situations. These leaders adjust how they manage depending on the particular situation and/or event. This theory holds truth in a nursing setting that a leader needs to be flexible in that the department is ever changing minute by minute. This requires the manger to assess the needs of their team and make necessary changes that may not have been in place originally. Although this is a necessary trait to have as a nursing manager, if this is abused, it may create chaos in the department with the staff being unclear to what the objectives are. There needs to be some consistency so that goal(s) can be achieved and the staff knows what is expected of them. Transformational theory defines this leader as inspirational. This is also known as the relationship theory. This person focuses on the teams performance and on helping each individual meet their own potential instead of having the person work in a capacity that may go against who they are. This style capitalizes on utilizing peoples unique personalities and skills. The manager under this theory centers on the relationship between themselves and their staff. This leader works well in the nursing department because they are not only seen as a leader but have been accepted as part of the team instead of an authority. This relational approach opens the department up to more communication and a healthier work environment. Like other theories if this is abused by the staff of over done by the leader this can become imbalanced creating an unhealthy relationship between the nurse leader and the staff.
