If diarrhea occurs over a period of 2-4 weeks it’s considered persistent, and anything longer than 4 weeks is considered chronic. (Stang, 2024) Causes of diarrhea include GI disorders, food allergies, viral and bacterial infections, and medications. Diarrhea can also be categorized into 4 different types: Osmotic from artificial sweeteners, secretory (large volume) from infections, secretory (small volume) from GI disorders like Crohn’s disease or Ulcerative colitis, and Motility diarrhea which can be caused from diabetic neuropathy, laxative abuse, or hyperthyroidism. (Stang, 2024) Signs and symptoms include frequent loose stools, abdominal pain and cramping, and bloody stool. (Stang, 2024) On the other hand, constipation is the infrequency of bowel movement.
