1- Complexity leadership theory is a framework that allows adaptability and flexibility of organizations and leaders (Uhl-Bien 2020). This means that each group will have unique needs from their leader. It really depends on the group dynamic, resources, and the leader. Servant leadership is a non-traditional style of leadership that allows the leader to serve the group. This leadership style is not about achieving power but rather creating trust, encouraging diversity, and meeting needs. Learning about this style has made me realize this is the type of leader I want to be. Recently, I have become the Medical Assistant Lead at my job. This is a supervisor position, so I had a mentor come in and tell me to “not get to close to the employees.” This is not the leader I want to be. I want to be a servant leader. I do this by working on the floor alongside my employees, making sure I have open communication with everyone and make them feel heard, and meeting their needs immediately or as quickly as I can. Leadership styles can be very complex and are often categorized based on how an individual behaves, preceives power, and responds to chaos, change and conflict. Most professionals develop their own style of leadership based on factors like experience, personality, the unique needs of their company and its organizational culture. Although there are many different leadership styles, four of the most common styles include: autocratic (authoritarian), servant, transactional and transformational. Authoritarian leaders are seen as commanding and believe they need to have power and control over their staff. The decision-making is centralized and the leader is the only person that makes the critical decisions. With this type of leadership. the rest of the team is only involved when needed to complete a task (Ahmed Iqbal et al., 2021). Servant leaders on the other hand prioritize serving the greater good. Leaders with this style serve their team first and seeks to achieve a vision by providing strong support to employees. In turn, this allows employees to learn and grow while bringing their own expertise and vision to the table (Canavesi & Minelli, 2021). Transactional leadership is defined by control, organization, and short-term planning. Leaders who adopt this style rely on a system of rewards and punishment to motivate their staff. Transactional leaders are often those who believe that micromanaging and constant monitoring of staff performance is effective. Transformational leadership is an approach that causes change in individuals and organizational culture. Transformational leadership creates valuable and positive change in the followers with the end goal of developing followers into leaders (Langston University, 2021). In researching the different leadership types, I learned the importance of finding what leadership style fits you best. As a leader, understanding your leadership style can help you become a better communicator with those you are leading. Not only does your style play a major role in how you lead, but it also impacts the culture, employee morale and performance. Personally, I admire those who are transformational leaders and I think transformational leadership styles are most successful. Transformational leaders are those who stimulate and inspire employees to not only reach the goals of the organization, but also develop their own leadership capacity. During my tenure as a healthcare professional, I have experienced a number different leaders with a variety of styles. In my opinion, I believe I thrive more under leaders who are transformational. From my experience, transformational leaders are more willing to teach you new things that will not only benefit the organization, but you will be able to use the skill to further your career. I think that is a very important component to leadership and shows that they see a greater potential in you that exceeds your current role.
