Original Question

comment and ask question about…. When preparing for a triathlon, the most important principle will be periodization; the athlete needs to be able to cycle their training to improve muscular and aerobic endurance but also needs to avoid fatigue, injury, negative mental/emotional impacts, and other symptoms of overtraining. The principle of individuality needs to be applied to make sure that each specific athlete is training appropriately to improve muscular and aerobic performance in their bodies. Also, the principle of specificity is required, as the athletes need to train for the specific events they will compete in; a triathlete that will compete in cycling, swimming, and running shouldn’t be completing exercises that are done for powerlifting, for example. The progressive overload principle will allow proper muscle and aerobic improvement to prepare for a very demanding event like a triathlon. Appropriate strength training in a mesocycle will cause moderate performance enhancements in distance-performing athletes (Berryman et al., 2018). Overtraining might pose the largest problem for triathlon athletes, as it may with most elite athletes, as they may attempt to maximize their gains too quickly or at unreasonable levels. A tri-athlete competing in a swimming, running, and cycling event may attempt to overtrain on the treadmill, in the pool, and on a “suicide bike” all in one week for example; this athlete will be exhausted to the point of having to stop training, and will likely end up with injuries from attempting to maximize performance in 3 very demanding sports too soon together. The principle that should best complement a triathlete is specificity; training for only one’s specific events should allow the athletes to be able to perform best in those exact events; any exercises that don’t show data for improvement in their specific events can be ignored and exercises that do show improvement for their specific events can be prioritized. Considering that we, as health professionals, want all people to be encouraged to exercise, I would deem aerobic exercise to be more appropriate to prescribe to ensure that all people will be willing to participate in exercise. There are still many women who are turned off by strength training, adopting the idea that it will make them bulky or masculine (Salvatore & Marecek, 2010). Aerobic exercise seems to be more appealing to both sexes, and there’s a great chance that HIIT aerobic exercise can lead to weight loss (Shiraev & Barclay, 2012). By these standards, I will consider aerobic exercise a better form to prescribe. The Bible tells us that our body is a “temple of the Holy Spirit” (1 Corinthians 6:19a). A temple is a place that is meant to be kept orderly and holy (set apart). Remembering this allows us to prioritize keeping our body orderly, in good health, and separate from the activities that those in the world may partake in. As kinesiologists, we can remind our patients that their bodies are temples, meant to be well-kept and cared for dearly to encourage them to prioritize fitness and health.
