CASE STUDY 1: Michael Trevor, 62 years old, COPD Michael Trevor (Mick) is a 62-year-old male and retired builder who was referred to the Emergency Department (ED) from his General Practitioner (GP) with exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Mick was diagnosed with COPD 12 months ago and in the last 6 months has had increasing shortness of breath and fatigue. This past month, Mick has found his breathing has become worse during physical exertion of routine tasks at home, and now this is occurring at rest. He has a history of cardiovascular disease (CVD), heart failure (HF), atrial fibrillation (AF), and osteoarthritis (OA). He tells you he has a 30-year smokers cough which is now producing thick yellow sputum and has been wheezing more at night. Mick has had 3 chest infections over the past year requiring antibiotics and states his shortness of breath is worse than when he had asthma as a young person.
