My capstone leadership project focuses on fall prevention in the workplace. Falls can become very common, if the proper procedures are not followed. According to the Patient Safety Net (2019), falls occur at a rate of 3-5 per 1,000 bed days and estimates that 700,000 to 1 million hospitalized patients fall each year. This is a very large number, and it is more serious because falls can lead to serious complications. Complications that can form from falls include fractures, subdural hematomas, excessive bleeding and even death (Dykes et al., 2018). Falls are preventable and should be preventable when the correct supervision and care is used. To correct and prevent falls in the workplace, I plan to host monthly seminars with staff nurses and elaborate on ways to reduce and prevent patient falls. Information will be presented through slideshows and printed handouts. I will place sign-up sheets in the nurse’s station as well as the breakrooms for nurses to sign up for the seminar. This project will impact my specific area because the nursing staff will learn and review ways to prevent falls in patients, which will help keep patients safe and free from injury. I do not have any fears or insecurities on initiating my project because I believe that this will be a great proposal to eliminate or decrease patient falls. Leadership skills I bring to this project are communication, planning and delivery skills, and strategic thinking. The leadership skill I hope to improve on is the ability teach and mentor.
