My writing is below Bioterrorism generally involves releasing lethal biological agents like germs, bacteria, and viruses with the intention of causing terror in the community. These biological agents are used as weapons because they can induce severe illnesses and in some cases, they may even kill living organisms. A biological agent that has been used to perpetrate terrorist attacks in the past is anthrax (Bacillus anthracis). According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) (2020), anthrax has been used as a biological weapon across the world for nearly a century. For instance, it was used in 2001 in the united States where powdered anthrax was placed in several letters and sent through the U.S. postal system. Twenty-two people were infected by the agent and five of them eventually succumbed to death. The CDC (2020) postulates that anthrax is a “category A” agent that causes symptoms such as painless skin sores/ulcers with a black center that appears after the small blisters, swelling around the sore, as well as a group of small blisters that may be itching. Other symptoms include coughs, fever and chills headache, shortness of breath, body aches, sore throat, chest discomfort, fainting, sweating, and stomach pains. The conventional treatment for anthrax is the use of antibiotic drugs, such as doxycycline and ciprofloxacin (Sweeney et al., 2011). The effectiveness of treatment is best when administered soonest after exposure. However, effectiveness of the medications may also depend on certain individual related factors like age. Some of the decontamination precautions for this biological agent include washing hands and disinfecting other contaminated areas. According to CDC (2020), professionals who respond to such a biological attack should wear personal protective equipment (PPE), including Particulate Air (HEPA) Filters respiratory devices, disposable gloves, and protective clothing.
