My writing is below After reading more about the laws and disaster preparedness, it is my understanding that there is currently no law stating that a nurse is required to respond to a disaster situation. Due to the character of a nurse, many do respond in disaster situations but the decision is usually based on the safety of themselves and their families. For many of us, I would say that we saw the dilemma of ethics during the pandemic. Many nurses responded to the situation in full force, leaving their homes and traveling to the areas of high demand to assist and treat others, putting themselves at risk. But there were also others, who took leave of absence due to having sick family members or just felt the risk of exposure was too great. In an article by ANA, it mentions that nurses struggle with provision two, primary commitment is caring for the patient, and provision five, have an obligation not only to others but to themselves, during times of disaster. For those that do respond, there are many laws of protection. In California, there is a good samaritan law for a nurse, who cannot be held legally responsible if they are caring for someone in need during an emergency situation if act morally and are not apart of a response team. There is also another law in California that covers liability if a situation is declared a local, state, or national emergency. References: American Nurses Association. (2017). Who Will Be There?
