I do not believe testing is a useful method of measuring a person’s potential for academic achievements because multiple things such as mood, motivation, and fatigue can influence someone’s score. (Francois 2012). Another reason is that some people suffer from test anxiety, a feeling of anxiousness when taking a test and may not do as well as they are capable of. With that being said, I do not believe colleges should base admissions on SAT and ACT scores. Knowing that there are 3 types of memories, sensory, short term, and long term, I feel as though those tests only monitor short term things opposed to those that have been learned and stored in the brain long term. In my opinion I think the more activities a person is in shows a certain level of dedication. Clubs in school and sports especially, require dedication and determination, along with maintaining a certain grade point average to continue participating. According to Francois, intelligence requires both analytical and creative abilities. Creativity can not be scored on tests. Therefore, I believe a personal interview would be more beneficial to admitting students. I know this would be very time consuming, but a lot can be learned about a person by sitting with them and talking one on one. Sometimes, students have a lot of life experience which can contribute to intelligence. Some of the most famous artists were creative geniuses and can not be necessarily measured by an IQ test. Other methods should most certainly be addressed.
