Original Question

Atrial Fibrillation is a common dysrhythmia and Lanoxin may be prescribed as one treatment for this condition. It is an old drug, but one that is still used today. When the sinus node (pacemaker of the heart) beats really fast as in Atrial Fibrillation and Atrial Flutter, the ventricles of the heart cannot keep up with the fast heart rate therefore all the blood is not pumped out of the left ventricle with the heart beat, so you have increased heart rate, but decreased cardiac output ( the left ventricle does not empty all of the blood with the heart beat). When the blood stays in the bottom of the ventricle, it tends to clot and may force a blood clot into the system causing a stroke (cerebral vascular accident, CVA). Patients are usually put on cardiac medications to slow the heart rate and increase the cardiac output. Most are always are put on a blood thinners (such as Xeralto, Eliquis, or Coumadin) to prevent clots. You may have seen these commercials on TV. If you retain fluid and develop congestive heart failure, you will have decreased urine output, swelling of the legs/ankles and shortness of breath due to excess fluid in you lungs and lower extremities. Furosemide (Lasix) is a loop diuretic that works on the Loop of Henley in the kidneys to increase urine output which will assists the body to get rid of the excess fluid. Please discuss the importance of knowing purpose of medications administered, adverse reactions to observe/monitor for, and desired outcomes of these medications.
