Original Question
After watching the video: Thin 2006 Documentary Base on The True Story Movie (1:40:19). To know and to see are two totally different realities. I know my mom has struggled with an eating disorder for the majority of my life. To see the women in this documentary purging brought a very real truth home for me. I saw behaviors in these women which I also see in my mother, and they now make a great deal more sense. Because of her eating disorder my mother has struggled with osteoporosis most of her life. She had to have both her hips replaced and almost couldn’t because her bones were so soft. The softness of her bones has also created issues post-surgery. She has had a great deal of struggle with her teeth due to erosion from stomach acid and now she is starting to have issues with her heart. It is so painful to watch her struggle. I would put the things I saw in this documentary into two different categories. The first being the staff at the facility. One of the first things I noticed was the growth that the mental health community has made regarding patient care since the making of this documentary. My current site supervisor is very passionate about client centered verbiage. After watching this documentary, I now understand. Some of the comments made regarding the patients, and to the patients, were incredibly demeaning and dehumanizing. It changed the way that staff viewed the patients as well as how the patients viewed themselves. This documentary also highlighted the power of the therapeutic relationship on multiple occasions. It also highlighted the harsh reality of provider burnout and the extreme importance for self care as providers (Newhouse, 2006). The second category would be the patients. Where I would say I gained a better understanding of eating disorders from this documentary would be in just how extreme and irrational the distorted sense of self is. I can see how that would make this population incredibly difficult to work with. I was also shocked at the amount of generational disorder eating that there was, that really broke my heart. Also, how deceptive they were. In hindsight it makes sense, but to see it in action was really shocking. I was surprised at the things that were considered contraband. Also, the level of control that these girls needed and how it manifested. This seemed to correlate with their self-harm in that when they were unable to gain control it fed into their self-loathing and thus, they would inflict physical harm to their person. Both the eating disorder and the self-harm are manifestations of loss of control and lack of self-worth. In regards to which comes first the loss of control or the lack of self-worth, I see that as being a chicken or the egg type of argument as highlighted in many of these girls’ stories (Newhouse, 2006). 1 Samuel 16:7 is tucked among the verses in which Samuel is looking at which one of Jesse’s sons will be the new king of Israel. Verse 7 is God giving Samuel guidance after Samuel is impressed with Jesse’s first-born son. God reveals to Samuel what actually matter to Him and that is the heart of the person. Proverbs 4:23 (2008) tell us, “Keep your heart with all vigilance, for from it flow the springs of life” (English standard version). If life flows from the heart of a person, then it is fair to say that these poor girls are truly brokenhearted. Psalm 34:18 (2008) reminds us that, “The Lord is near the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit” (English standard version). God is near those struggling with self-harm and eating disorders and is calling us to see them not based upon their outward presentation and the actions that they undertake in their brokenness, but to be with them as they learn to guard their heart against the insidiousness of this self-destructive behavior.
