Risk factors that contribute to the pathogenesis of this include age, coronary artery disease, coronary artery bypass graft surgery, diabetes, and hypertension. As one ages, there is “impaired antioxidant defense mechanisms and mitochondrial dysfunction, which exacerbate ischemia-reperfusion injury” (Welt et al., 2024). Having pre-existing heart conditions increases the risk of reperfusion injury because either there is already “chronic ischemia” being developed due to atherosclerosis (Zhao & Zhang, 2023). Having diabetes also increases the chances of having reperfusion injury since this comorbidity “contribute to endothelial dysfunction, oxidative stress, and inflammation” (Zhao & Zhang, 2023). As stated above, the pathophysiology of reperfusion injury starts after reoxygenation of the tissue.
