Original Question

Vaccination A first-time parent has brought their newborn to their pediatrician for a regularly-scheduled checkup. The child is in very good overall health and is due to receive a round of vaccinations according to the recommended schedule. The child’s parent, however, has come to believe that there is a causal link—that is, a chain of cause and effect—between childhood vaccinations and autism spectrum disorder. In spite of repeated attempts to inform the patient about the safety of vaccines and the lack of credible evidence linking childhood vaccinations and autism, the caregiver is unable to convince the parent to have the child vaccinated. — In the Flu Victim case in Section 2.2 of the Unit 6 course text, and in the Vaccination case above, there is a difference in the factual, empirical beliefs held by the patient (in the Flu case) or patient’s parent (in the Vaccination one) and the caregiver. In the Flu Victim example, the patient falsely believes that antibiotics will effectively treat his viral infection. In the Vaccination case, the patient’s parent believes that there is a causal link between vaccination and autism spectrum disorder, even though there is overwhelming scientific evidence against the existence of any such link. It seems reasonable to think that the caregivers in both examples should act to convince the patients to reject their demonstrably false beliefs. Is there a reason to think either the Flu Victim’s caregiver or the Vaccination patient’s has a stronger duty to convince, or to do more to convince, the patient/parent to reject their faulty beliefs? Why or why not?
