FAST is the first acronym that comes to mind when I think of manifestations of a stroke. FAST stands for face assessment (facial drooping, asymmetry, sudden paralysis of part of the face), arm weakness (ask the patient to hold up both arms and assess for unilateral weakness), speech impairment such as slurring or “word salad,” and T stands for Time to seek help and get the patient to CT as quickly as possible (Williams, 2021). If they’re not treated in a timely manner, strokes can cause ischemic changes in the brain that can affect motor, sensory, and cognitive function for the rest of the patient’s life (Ryu et al., 2022). One of my favorite patients at my internal medicine job is a woman in her 60’s who suffered a stroke about 10 years ago. She has permanently slow/slurred speech, partial facial paralysis, and requires use of an electric scooter to get around efficiently. She just informed me that she divorced her husband because he was treating her badly as a result of her impairments. This goes to show that the long term effects of strokes affect not only the patient, but their loved ones as well with the increased stress of making significant adjustments to daily life that differ so greatly from before the stroke. Just this last week, that patient of mine came in and talked to me about how since her stroke, she had developed a new view on the world. What she described to me was very similar to the Statement of Human Flourishing, “At each point we choose to be unkind and unloving we deviate from the purposes and plans of God,” (Grand Canyon University, 2022). She had come to this realization that at the end of the day, the biggest goal in life is to treat others well and spread positivity everywhere you go no matter what you’ve been through. Had that favorite patient of mine been in her acute healing phase of her cerebrovascular accident, as a nurse I would have provided her with large print resources for practicing her faith as well as establishing a way to communicate her emotional and psychological needs and feelings throughout her healing process, such as a scale to rate her moods on.
