Original Question

In agreement with: Over the course of my nursing education, simulation has proven to be one of the most effective tools for developing clinical skills and confidence. I have participated in both low- and high-fidelity simulations, including task trainers for IV starts and full-scale code scenarios with high-fidelity mannequins. One of the simulations that stuck with me was a scenario involving a patient who went into cardiac arrest secondary to sepsis. I was assigned the role of team leader and was responsible for coordinating compressions, airway management, and medication administration. We ran this scenario with various patient outcomes, which allowed us to practice in a safe environment. It was a challenging experience, but it stressed the importance of teamwork and real-time decision-making. Although traditional clinical placements are irreplaceable for exposing students to real patient interactions, I believe simulation can be just as valuable in many learning situations. One advantage I have come to appreciate about simulation is how it allows students to work through rare or high-risk scenarios in a structured, low-stakes environment. This kind of exposure can be difficult to guarantee during clinical rotations, where opportunities are often dependent on patient census and case mix. Having the opportunity to make decisions safely, apply technical skills, and even make mistakes without harming a real patient is a significant strength of this approach. Research supports this perspective, as Alharbi et al. (2024) found that students who participated in simulation-based training demonstrated consistent improvement in both their clinical understanding and hands-on performance. In addition, Mulyadi et al. (2021) found that learners demonstrated increased confidence and satisfaction when simulation exercises included structured debriefing sessions. These findings align with my own experiences. Simulated learning not only reinforces knowledge but also promotes readiness for actual clinical encounters. Part 2: Throughout this course, the experience of developing a three-week blended learning module in Moodle has had a profound impact on my perspective on the role of technology in nursing education. Two aspects stood out: the process of creating immersive and interactive content and the use of structured debriefing and reflection as part of the online learning experience. Working in Moodle helped me see the depth of planning required to design meaningful online instruction. I quickly realized that course design involved much more than simply uploading materials or filling in placeholders. It required careful alignment between learning objectives, course activities, and assessments, all while ensuring the layout was easy for students to follow. One of the projects I created was a simulation-based case study focused on clinical decision-making in a home health scenario. After completing the activity, students would participate in a debriefing discussion, which would encourage reflection and a deeper understanding of the content. Integrating this into Moodle showed me how digital platforms can support both autonomy and collaboration, which are essential for adult learners (Knowles et al., 2020). I also learned the importance of building content, starting with foundational knowledge and gradually building toward more complex skills. Especially when teaching clinical judgment online. Before taking this course, I considered technology more as a tool to “enhance” teaching. Now, I see it as essential to delivering flexible, learner-centered education that meets the evolving needs of today’s nursing students. Recent literature supports this shift. Berga et al. (2021) emphasize that online and blended learning, when well-designed, can lead to outcomes comparable to traditional face-to-face instruction, particularly when faculty incorporate multimedia, interactivity, and structured reflection. This course has given me a stronger foundation and greater confidence in using technology not just as a delivery method but as a way to create engaging, student-centered learning experiences. As I grow into my role as a nurse educator, I plan to apply what I have learned by thoughtfully integrating simulation, virtual case studies, and interactive course design to support students in both online and face-to-face settings. These strategies will help foster critical thinking, adaptability, and clinical judgment in a flexible learning environment.
