Since my last name begins with the letter B, my assigned component is the P wave. The P wave on an electrocardiogram represents atrial depolarization, which is the electrical event that triggers atrial contraction, also known as an atrial systole. This process is initiated by the sinoatrial node, the heart’s natural pacemaker, and allows blood to move from the atria into the ventricles before ventricular contraction. The impulse spreads through the atria through internodal pathways, reaches the atrioventricular node, and then pauses briefly before continuing to the ventricles. This coordinated electrical activity ensures efficient blood circulation and proper heart function (Douedi, 2024). Atrial fibrillation is a homeostatic imbalance that disrupts the P wave and normal atrial function. Instead of a single P wave, the EKG shows absent or erratic fibrillatory waves due to multiple ectopic foci in the atria firing chaotically. This results in uncoordinated atrial contraction, reducing cardiac output and increasing the risk of blood clot formation and stroke. The irregular electrical signals also reach the AV node unpredictably, leading to an irregular heart rhythm, which can cause palpitations, dizziness, and even heart failure if untreated (Johns Hopkins Medicine, 2023). Recognizing these changes in the P wave is essential for diagnosing and managing atrial fibrillation to prevent severe cardiovascular complications.
