Original Question

Discussion Several health care organizations that provide externship sites for SMCC Medical Assisting students have a formal “Career Ladder” they use to decide whether or not to promote medical assistants. There are several common components to these Career Ladders. Most employers expect their employees to set SMART goals in an effort to advance and take on more responsibility within the organization. There are many things a student can do to advance, including gaining additional credentials/ certifications, becoming a trainer, or taking ownership of special projects or quality initiatives. Project #1 has you consider these things as you write a paper about additional credentialing for career advancement. For the Discussion Board this week, let’s just discuss a SMART goal you could actually accomplish THIS WEEK! Stephen Covey calls this an “easy win” – because when you set yourself up for a goal you can accomplish quickly, it makes you feel like you can tackle BIGGER goals! This SMART goal does NOT have to be related to medical assisting at all – the point is to get the acronym right! Remember a SMART Goal should be: SPECIFIC: a clear precise statement defining what you are striving for. For example, “I will cook a home-cooked meal and sit down with my family for dinner at least ONE TIME this week!” MEASUREABLE How will we know you achieved the goal? “I will provide a photo of me and my family eating the meal!” ATTAINABLE: Do you have the time, money, tools, eligibility to meet the goal? “Looking at my calendar, it appears I have the time to actually do this on Tuesday (Thursday will be my back-up date!” RELEVANT: Describe how this goal is pertinent/important: “Fast food probably isn’t as healthy as something I could make at home; it’s important to me for my family to have a healthy meal AND to take the time to sit down with my family to chat over dinner. Whenever we are able to do this, we communicate better the whole rest of the week.! TIMELY: Describe when you will complete this goal. I already set the time for you: “I will complete this goal by the module due date.” So, on the discussion board, tell us all what your SPECIFIC, MEASURABLE, ATTAINABLE and RELEVANT goal is for this week!
